Matthew McConaughey is filming his new movie in Massachusetts. Production kicked off Monday for his drama “Sea of Trees,” which costars Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts, and is being directed by Gus Van Sant, who, remember, helmed the Boston-based “Good Will Hunting.” Unit publicist Gregg Brilliant tells us that the movie — which has an A-list team that includes film editor Pietro Scalia, who also worked on “Good Will Hunting”; screenwriter Chris Sparling, of “Buried”; and production designer Alex DiGerlando, of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” — will not film in Boston proper. The crew was in Foxborough for the first few days of the shoot, and will travel all around Massachusetts. It will also film in Japan. Brilliant didn’t disclose the film’s budget but said “we are spending several million dollars in [Massachusetts] and providing jobs for hundreds of locals.” He explains that the film is about the relationship between two men who meet at the Sea of Trees, a real place at the base of Mount Fuji that has been a popular place for suicides. This is McConaughey’s first film since he won his best actor Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club.” Also filming around Boston is a very different kind of project, “Ted 2,” starring Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Seth MacFarlane .
