New ‘Ghostbusters’ to be partially shot in Boston
Hollywood still has its eye on the Hub, obviously. In addition to David O. Russell’s “Joy,” which is set to start shooting here with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, and director Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea,” which Casey Affleck will begin working on soon, word is Sony Pictures is planning to shoot a good portion of the new “Ghostbusters” in Boston as well. Indeed, we’re told preproduction has already begun on the reboot featuring an all-female lead cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Shooting will begin in the spring, when the city isn’t buried by snow. The movie will be directed by Paul Feig, who’s familiar with Boston from shooting “The Heat” here a few years ago. (Feig also co-wrote the script for the new “Ghostbusters.”) There had been talk of getting the original “Ghostbusters” gang — Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson — back together again, but Ramis died last year. HBO is also eyeing a return to the North Shore, where last year’s miniseries “Olive Kitteridge” was filmed. We’re told that a Salem witch drama being developed for HBO by “Orange Is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan — and rumored, at least, to be directed by Gus Van Sant — could begin shooting on the North Shore in March.
