Handel and Haydn Society has a birthday ball worthy of its 200th

The Handel and Haydn Society celebrated its 200th birthday on Saturday with the Society Ball, a gala at Symphony Hall, where the ensemble has performed since 1900. Chairing the festivities — a night designed by event planner Bryan Rafanelli — were Alli and Bill Achtmeyer, Deborah and Robert First; CNN analyst and Harvard prof David Gergen and his wife, Anne ; Jane Manilych and incoming H&H board chair and Harvard prof W. Carl Kester; CEO of Plymouth Rock Insurance James Stone and his wife, Cathleen; and H&H supporters Walter and Kathleen Weld, who's co-chairing a $12 million capital campaign for the society. Guests included Wayland's Emily Strehle, Julie Kelly, and Amanda Melander; and two of the night's VIPs, H&H artistic director Harry Christophers and his wife, Veronica.
