Ben Affleck has begun shooting scenes in Lawrence for his new movie, "Live by Night," which he's directing. Based on the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, "Live by Night" is a Prohibition-era crime drama starring Affleck as Joe Coughlin, the son of a Boston police captain who gets involved in organized crime. (Passersby will notice that downtown suddenly has an old-timey vibe, including a sudden preponderance of vintage cars.) The movie, not due to be released until 2017, costars Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Max Casella, Chris Cooper, and Scott Eastwood. Affleck is expected to shoot in Lawrence through Nov. 23. Mayor Dan Rivera is happy to host Hollywood, especially since the filmmakers have cut the city a $100,000 check.
