“Black Mass” missed out on another honor over the weekend. The local film — which was passed over for Oscar and Golden Globe nominations — lost the prize for special makeup effects during the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards to the team behind “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Other nominees in the category included “Ex Machina,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2.” Johnny Depp — who was transformed into James “Whitey” Bulger in “Black Mass” by artists Joel Harlow, Kenny Niederbaumer, and Khanh Trance — was at the show to present lifetime achievement honors to makeup artist Ve Neill (“Mockingjay — Part 2” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past”) and hair stylist Yolanda Toussieng (“Insurgent” and “Hairspray”). Both women worked with Depp on “Edward Scissorhands.” The awards show was hosted by Loni Love.
