BC Law professor wins Bancroft Prize

Mary Sarah BilderBoston College

Congrats to Boston College Law School professor Mary Sarah Bilder, whose book, “Madison’s Hand: Revisiting the Constitutional Convention,” was one of the winners of the Bancroft Prize, considered to be among the most prestigious awards in the field of American history writing. Bilder’s book uses digital technology and textual analysis to study how James Madison revised his notes on the event, thereby challenging the belief that Madison’s version of the 1787 Constitutional Convention was an objective contemporaneous account. The award comes with a $10,000 stipend. The other winners were Lafayette College professor Deborah Rosen’s book, “Border Law: The First Seminole War and American Nationhood,” and “The Saltwater Frontier: Indians and the Contest for the American Coast” by Andrew Lipman, an assistant professor at Barnard College.
