Doris Kearns Goodwin made a grand entrance when she appeared on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Thursday night. She came out dancing through fake fog with “Broad City” stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer grooving to the beat of the house band’s instrumental version of “Ladies Night” by Kool & the Gang. The trio then strolled to the couch to talk politics with Colbert and discuss the significance of the Democratic party nominating Hillary Clinton for president.

“Thanks for being here on this historic night,” said Colbert. “Are you feeling the history of this moment?”

“Without a question,” said the Pulitzer Prize-winning author said. “I mean it’s historic, right? Why?”

“Well you’re the historian — you have to tell me, Doris,” said Colbert.

Goodwin kindly obliged.

“None of us here, none of our parents, none of our grandparents, nobody in the history of this whole nation has seen a woman who has become the nominee of a major party,” said Goodwin. “That’s history.”

“The amazing thing, I think, is. . . we’ve had 43 men presidents, maybe there will be 43 female presidents coming after [this],” said Goodwin. “Can you imagine?”

“In a row?” said Colbert.

“In a row,” said Goodwin. “A whole string of them.”

“Just to even things out,” said Colbert.

“And then imagine,” said Goodwin, with a smile, “there’ll be some little boy saying, ‘will I ever be president?’ ” The audience laughed.

“I’ve got hope for him,” said Colbert, nodding his head. “I’ve got hope for him.”
