More than 300 guests were at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury Friday evening attending BASE Ball III, the third annual gala supporting BASE. The nonprofit, founded by former Boston Foundation VP Robert Lewis Jr. (who launched the youth baseball team the Boston Astros in 1978), helps urban student athletes achieve success in both athletics and academics. Mayor Marty Walsh and Micho Spring of global PR firm Weber Shandwick were honored at the event, and Governor Charlie Baker, there with his wife, Lauren, was a special guest. Shawn Dove, CEO of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement, provided remarks. The event was co-chaired by John Cook of UBS, Kate Guedj of The Boston Foundation, Matt LeBretton of New Balance, Al Minahan of Preti Strategies, Darla Pires DeGrace of the National Black MBA Association, and Janelle Woods-McNish of Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare.
