Boston Common magazine just named the city’s top five Instagram stars. Leading the way was Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman (2.2 million followers), followed by fashion illustrator Holly Nichols (549,000 followers), and chef Jamie Bissonnette (45,370 followers). Rounding out the magazine’s top five were DJ Brek. One and a members-only photo community known as IG Boston.
In an interview with the magazine, Nichols explained how social media has helped her career as a professional artist. “My account started as a way to document my portfolio,” she said. “Soon I was being asked by the public about where they could purchase my work, and getting inquiries from brands on how they could work with me. Soon after, I quit my day job.”
Nichols said she gets “almost all” of her opportunities through social media.
“Even less than 10 years ago, artists had to work for years to get their work noticed,” she said. “Now, it can happen as soon as you hit share.”
