Guests who celebrated at Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s holiday party at Clerys Monday night were the first to hear the news about next year’s Shakespeare on the Common production.

For summer 2017, CSC has chosen the romantic tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.” The company last performed the play about the star-crossed lovers in 1997.

CSC Founding Artistic Director Steve Maler also announced that production will be directed by Saheem Ali , whose 2017 schedule also includes “Kill Move Paradise” at the National Black Theatre.

Names at the CSC holiday party included Jennifer Ellis, who was in the company’s 2016 production “Love’s Labour’s Lost”; Deb Martin, who was in 2015’s “King Lear”; Tivon Marcus from Broadway in Boston; and Obehi Janice, who was also in “Lost” last summer.
