Casey Affleck says he didn’t expect to win the best actor Oscar and that’s why his acceptance speech was so scrambled and incoherent. In an interview this week, the actor, who won for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea,” acknowledged he wasn’t prepared when he stepped on stage.

“I thought there were some great actors and great performances in that category, and I truly, genuinely didn’t expect that to happen,” he said. “I was speechless and dumbstruck. The only thing worse than not ever getting to make an Oscar speech is getting to make an Oscar speech and then having nothing to say.”

Affleck, whose older brother, Ben Affleck, has won two Academy Awards, wishes he hadn’t froze in that moment.

“My mind was blank and I forgot to thank so many people who helped me make the movie,” he said. “I didn’t mention the two most important people in my life: my kids. It was just kind of a dizzying moment.”
