It looks like Julian Edelman may be the reason the New York Mets suspended pitcher Matt Harvey (inset).
Word from the Big Apple is that Harvey was an “emotional wreck” after seeing pictures of his supermodel girlfriend Adriana Lima out and about with the Patriots receiver, and that’s why Harvey was a no-show at the Mets game Saturday night. When Harvey showed up to pitch on Sunday, he was told he’d been suspended.
Edelman and Lima had dated for several months beginning last summer, but the pretty pair broke up shortly after the Pats won the Super Bowl in February. A few weeks later, Harvey, who has a reputation for dating supermodels, was photographed locking lips with Lima at a restaurant in Miami.
According to the New York Post, Harvey was stricken last week when he saw paparazzi photos of Lima and Edelman stepping out of a limo on their way to Rihanna’s Met Gala after-party. It didn’t help that Lima and her ex were “flirty” at the party, or that the Brazilian beauty unfollowed Harvey on Instagram — the horror! — after the event.
Harvey pitched in Atlanta a few hours after seeing the photos and it didn’t go well: He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings. Then last Saturday, the pitcher was out partying with friends until 4 a.m., and informed the team later in the day that he had a headache and couldn’t make it to the park. The next day he was suspended.
Harvey has since apologized — without specifically addressing the reasons for his absence.
“I put myself in a bad place to be ready for showing up to a ballgame,” Harvey told the media. “That is my responsibility. I take full blame for that and I’ve apologized to my teammates, I’ve apologized to the coaches, and I’m doing everything in my power so that never happens again.
“I understand everybody’s anger, or the organization doing what they did,” said Harvey. “I completely understand. It’s me who takes full blame for that. It’s me who needs to fix it and move forward, and make sure it never happens again.”
