Heads-up to fans of WBUR’s “On Point”: Tom Ashbrook will be MIA for a while.

The show’s host posted a note on the WBUR website letting listeners know he’s stepping away from the mike to take care of a medical issue.

“Next week I’m headed in for vascular surgery to fix a problem that my 85-year-old dad has had and his mother before him had as well,” Ashbrook wrote. “All in the family! It’s not the heart. I took care of that ten years ago. It’s a repair the doctors say I need. They say the fix is straightforward and very long-lasting. So I’m stepping up to take care of it. I’ll be out for the rest of May, and maybe a bit beyond.”

In 2014, Ashbrook took a leave to be with his wife, Danielle Guichard-Ashbrook, who was battling cancer. She subsequently died.

Ashbrook said he doesn’t expect “On Point” to miss a beat in his absence this time.

“My terrific producers will be here, working their magic for you every day,” he wrote. “And before you know it, I’ll be back in the saddle, on the air.”
