Patrick Dempsey looked pretty good in a cap and gown receiving an honorary degree at the Bates College commencement over the weekend. But then the 51-year-old actor who played neurosurgeon Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on “Grey’s Anatomy” always looks pretty good.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Dempsey, who never actually went to college but did grow up just blocks from the Bates campus in Lewiston, Maine. (The actor has used some of his considerable earnings from the hit show to create the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.)

He shared the stage with Harlem Children’s Zone president Geoffrey Canada, who delivered the commencement address, as well as honorary degree recipients Wanda Corn, a Bates alum who’s a distinguished art historian, and US SenatorSusan Collins of Maine.
