Last week, Boston artist and writer Christine Koh, of Brave New World Designs, saw another spike in sales for her most popular T-shirt.
People wanted the tee that features the face of Representative Maxine Waters — probably because of the California Democrat’s now-famous interruptions of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin during Thursday’s House Financial Services Committee meeting, in which Waters cited House procedural rule and repeated “reclaiming my time” to stop Mnuchin from stalling after she asked him a question.
Koh, also known for the Boston Mamas parenting blog, said she started making her shirts-with-a-message as a hobby, but said that after people kept asking her where they could buy them, she decided to sell the apparel and donate 20 percent of the proceeds to causes related to each design (shirts are $22.95). Her “Smash the Patriarchy” shirt raises money for Planned Parenthood. A shirt supporting the Oxford comma (it says “Team Oxford ,”) raises money for non-profit news organization ProPublica.
Sales from the Waters shirt — which she began selling on the crafty e-commerce site Etsy in February — have supported EMILY’s List, which aims to get pro-choice Democratic women elected to office. That shirt got its first boost in sales after it was worn by celebs Whoopi Goldberg and Alyssa Milano.
Koh said the popularity of that shirt has raised $2,200 for EMILY’s List so far.
“I spent hours on the artistic rendering of that shirt,” Koh wrote to the Globe, of the Waters tee. “Started with a photo of Maxine issuing the shade, and literally moved things pixel by pixel in Adobe Illustrator. We print at our home studio using a professional heat press.”
On Tuesday evening, Koh unveiled a second Waters shirt. This one features the phrase “Reclaiming my time,” with proceeds going to She Should Run, an organization for women considering going into politics.
It should be said that Waters is popular on Etsy, in general. Designers across the country have made buttons, shirts, mugs, jackets, and paintings in her honor.
