Former president Barack Obama was spotted dining at Harvest restaurant in Harvard Square on Monday. Now it’s clear why.
It’s freshman move-in time at Harvard, which means the Obamas are in town to help Malia Obama move into housing. Tuesday is official freshman move-in day for the class of 2021, but some students decide “to move in a day early, based on travel schedules, athletic schedules, or other needs,” according to a Harvard spokeswoman.
Malia, 19, took a gap year before starting college and seemed to make the most of it, including doing an internship earlier this year at The Weinstein Company film studio. The former first daughter has shown quite a bit of interest in the film and TV industry, reportedly working on the set of HBO’s “Girls” in 2015 and as a production assistant on the CBS show “Extant,” starring Halle Berry.
The Obamas spent a stretch of their summer in the area, returning once again to Martha’s Vineyard, one of their go-to vacation spots over the years.
Also in the incoming Harvard class is actress and activist Yara Shahidi, of “Black-ish,” who got a letter of recommendation for the school from former first lady Michelle Obama. She shared her college news in June on Instagram.
