You may have noticed Rosie O’Donnell has been spending a lot of time in Boston.

There’s good reason: O’Donnell is hard at work on Showtime’s new South Boston-based series “SMILF,” which most critics agree is good and could, eventually, be great. On the show, O’Donnell plays Tutu, a tough, narcissistic mom who struggles with manic depression.

But there’s something — or someone — else keeping O’Donnell in the area. The former cohost of “The View” has a new girlfriend and their relationship has gotten very serious very fast. Promoting “SMILF” the other day on “The Howard Stern Show,” Rosie said she’s smitten.

“I am in love,” she told Stern. “It’s the first time I’ve dated someone younger than me and it’s a very trippy thing.”

Through a bit of online sleuthing we’ve learned that O’Donnell’s new lady friend is Elizabeth Rooney, a 33-year-old Worcester police officer. (O’Donnell is 55.) We’re told Rooney has been an officer for about a year and a half, and is assigned to the WPD’s mounted unit. In the past month, Rosie has posted a couple of photos of Rooney, including this one of her in uniform.

The couple apparently met at a charity event while O’Donnell has been in town shooting “SMILF.” In the interview with Stern, O’Donnell, who’s been married twice before — her second wife, Michelle Rounds, committed suicide two years after the pair divorced — said she’s not interested in walking down the aisle again.

“I think that, for me, being 55, I think I would just rather stay in it for love and not have to deal with lawyers if God forbid it didn’t work out.” O’Donnell said.
