A politician in Northern Ireland was excited when she heard of Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle — so excited that when she reacted, she congratulated the wrong royal.
Arlene Foster leads the Democratic Unionist Party, the largest in the region. The unionists wish to remain part of Great Britain, and oppose any unification of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
According to the Irish News of Belfast, Foster’s first tweet on the subject referred to Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. The problem: He’s already married.
“Congratulations to HRH Prince William on his engagement to Megan Markle,” Foster wrote.
(Another problem: She misspelled Markle’s first name.)
Foster deleted her initial tweet and then congratulated Prince Harry.
Congratulations to HRH Prince Harry and Megan Markle on their engagement. Wonderful news this morning! pic.twitter.com/vwYP6GNNN6— Arlene Foster (@DUPleader) November 27, 2017
She still misspelled Markle’s first name, though.Sean Smyth can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @smythsays.
