Can you teach a cloned dog new tricks?
Barbra Streisand revealed in a recent Variety cover story that two of her three Coton de Tulear pups are clones of her beloved dog Samantha, who died last year at the age of 14.
Streisand told Variety that the two dogs — named Miss Scarlett and Miss Violet for the colors she adorned them in to tell them apart — were cloned from cells taken from Samantha’s mouth and stomach before she died.
“They have different personalities,” Streisand told the magazine. “I’m waiting for them to get older so I can see if they have her [Samantha’s] brown eyes and seriousness.”
Her third dog — named Miss Fanny, after her character in the classic 1968 film “Funny Girl” — is a distant cousin of Samantha’s, the article states.
According to the American Kennel Club, Coton de Tulear dogs are known for their “bright, happy-go-lucky” personalities, and lists “following an adored human around the house” as one of the breed’s favorite pastimes.
Streisand seems to be smitten with the breed. She regularly posts photos of her pups on Instagram, including one photo post as an ode to Samantha’s memory.
The interesting development led some to poke fun at the actress and singer, and a trending “moment” topic on Twitter.

Is this the natural progression of age+wealth? Because when I know it's possible to clone stuff, my brain doesn't go directly to "let's duplicate my floofy mop friend" https://t.co/4IBG4oXoD3— Emily Asher-Perrin (@use_theforce_em) February 27, 2018
not rescuing a dog out of the millions in need of it and instead paying absurd amounts of money to clone one is PEAK rich white people https://t.co/7CYvo1MP7p— Rohan Mathur (@RidersOvRohan) February 27, 2018
However, some dog owners seemed to empathize with the situation.
Look, if I were unfathomably rich, I would absolutely clone my dog and so would you. https://t.co/2F0T0rmEzW— Rafi Schwartz (@TheJewishDream) February 27, 2018

For her part, Streisand seemed to joke about her “Orphan Black”-esque clan of canines: She apparently asked Variety to caption a portrait of her with the dogs as “Send in the Clones.”
