That poor horse!
That was our first thought when we heard that former Sox slugger David Ortiz might be auditioning as a jockey at Florida’s Gulfstream Park as part of his reality TV show “Big Papi Needs a Job.” We don’t know much about jockeys, but we know they usually don’t look like Ortiz.
But it turns out the segment is about Ortiz learning the ropes as a thoroughbred owner. Papi paid a visit to trainer Mark Hennig’s barn, the grandstand, the paddock, and jockeys’ room, where he hung out with Hall of Fame jockeys John Velazquez and Angel Cordero.
“Big Papi Needs a Job,” which airs on Fusion TV, is a half-hour show all about the 6-foot-3 Ortiz, a native of the Dominican Republic, trying his hand at various professions unrelated to swinging a baseball bat.
