Chris Evans and Jenny Slate are over

We know nothing lasts forever, but we do wish the relationship between Chris Evans and Jenny Slate could have lasted a little longer.

It’s apparently not to be, though. The on-again off-again romance between the “Captain America” actor and actress best known for her performance in the indie hit “Obvious Child” is off again, and this time it may be for good.

In a lengthy New York Times profile of Evans, the Sudbury native who’s currently making his Broadway debut in Ken Lonergan’s “Lobby Hero,” there’s a reference to the relationship tucked between parentheses: “(their on-again, off-again relationship, beloved by the internet, recently ended).”

Oh well. The relationship between Evans and Slate, who’s also local, having grown up in Milton, began in late 2016, but they broke up shortly before the release last March of “Gifted,” a feel-good flick they made together. While promoting the film, Slate called Evans “truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met,” but also said they’d gone their separate ways.

Then last fall, the couple reconnected, and were seen hanging out together in Atlanta, where Evans was shooting “Avengers: Infinity War.” According to Instagram, they were together as recently as the holidays. (In December, Evans’s brother, former “One Life to Live” actor Scott Evans, posted a picture of himself with Slate, captioning it: “Christmas with my favorite Jew!”)

But not anymore.
