The 30-year-old daughter of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is said to be “shocked” and “heartbroken” by the death of her boyfriend, billionaire banking heir Matthew Mellon, who’d long battled an addiction to Oxycontin.
People.com reports that model Kick Kennedy had been dating the 53-year-old Mellon for about four months when he died this week in Cancun, Mexico. The cause of death has not been revealed, but Mellon was believed to be about to enter rehab for substance abuse issues.
Mellon, a descendant on his father’s side of Mellon Bank founder Thomas Mellon and on his mother’s side of the early investment banker Anthony Joseph Drexel, was previously married to Jimmy Choo cofounder Tamara Mellon, with whom he had a child, and to designer Nicole Hanley, with whom he had two children.
“She is devastated and will not be making comment,” Kennedy’s manager Christine Schott told People. “He was sober and they were enjoying life. Then all of a sudden he apparently fell off the wagon.”
Kennedy’s mother is RFK Jr.’s first wife, Emily Black, who was married to the son of the late New York senator from 1982 to 1994.
