It’s a scary thought.

But not for retailers.

Americans are expected to shell out $2 billion on decorations this Halloween, according to the National Retail Federation , and where better to get into the mood than in New England, a region with a long history and really old houses.

We asked readers to send us pictures of their homes dressed in their scary-holiday best. (It’s fitting that two come from a town named Dedham and that Johnny Cash’s headstone is the one in black.) We’ve printed our favorites here, and we’ll be sleeping with the lights on tonight.

If you’d like to submit photos of your decorated homes, email Address@globe.com or tweet @GlobeHomes.
