    Downtown Reading’s annual “Shop the Block” event happens Thursday from 5-9 p.m., with discounts and treats at many businesses. (Look for the red bows marking those participating.) Among the deals, Everything But the Dog (2 Haven St. #101, Reading, 781-944-5300, will have markdowns on holiday clothing, collars, and gift cards; Salon Fabiano (159 Ash St., Reading, 781-944-0524, will take 10 percent off gift certificates and hair care products; and Atlantic Framing and Gifts (78 Haven St., Reading, 781-944-4169, will give a gift with any $50 purchase, while supplies last.     On Sunday, Newton Centre businesses will offer special deals, menu items, and more during an Arts Stroll & Shop event from noon to 6 p.m. Among the discounts, Brussels Sprouts (105 Union St., Newton, 617-244-9832, will take $25 off purchases of $75 or more ($30 off if you bring a friend); Kiki D. Design & Consign (214 Sumner St., Newton, 617-467-4153, will offer 20 percent off all full-price items, including owner Beth Kurson’s line of handcrafted jewelry; and Duchess (77 Union St., Newton, 617-964-0054, www.duchess will offer 20 percent off all items.     Eighteen Belmont Center businesses including boutiques, food and beverage shops, and even Pilates studios will have deals and refreshments as part of the neighborhood’s midnight madness event on Monday from 6 p.m. to midnight. Bessie Blue (21 Leonard St., Belmont, 617-489-4900, will offer progressively steep discounts throughout the event; Thirty Petals Boutique (34 Leonard St., Belmont, 617-489-2334, will offer 20 percent off purchases all night; and Marmalade (63 Leonard St., Belmont, 617-484-0093,

    The Concord Free Public Library hosts a holiday book sale tomorrow through Sunday in its main lobby. Thousands of gently used hardcover and paperback books in just about all categories will sell for around $1-$10. The selection will be replenished throughout the sale (so you don’t need to worry if you don’t get there Friday morning). Proceeds will benefit library programs and parts of the collections.
