What do you wear to your own openings?

I tend to wear at least one new thing. [At first] it was just an amusing habit, but now it’s become a good-luck charm; so now I have to do it every time. I think there’s an impulse to redo yourself just as you redo the museum for the public.

That’s much less of an effort because, generally speaking, dealers in particular are pitching to you, not vice versa. But it would be a lie to say that curators and directors who are touring the galleries in Chelsea and New York or going to an art show in Miami or London aren’t very conscious about the way they present themselves.

Are there any artists or designers who influence you?

I’m sure you’ve had many people point to Alexander McQueen when you ask this question. I’m not necessarily saying the clothes that he designed or the character of his brand has a relationship to the things I buy, but I think a couple of things: One, the type of image of masculinity that that brand advanced I’ve always found really interesting. Second, the exhibition at the Met in New York, just museologically, was one of the most sublime things I’ve ever experienced. I left that show thinking that he was an artist through and through. I’m not sure that many other designers measure up to that.
