The Seaport has welcomed plenty of luxury residences recently — and, of course, these people need something to wear.
WS Development has announced that a trio of fashion tenants will take up residence at their One Seaport retail building in the coming months: Bonobos, Filson, and Mr. Sid. They join new-to-the-neighborhood brands like L.L. Bean and Bluemercury.
“The Seaport has been validated as a hotbed for restaurant and entertainment, and we think enhancing the pedestrian experience with fashion will make for a more intriguing district,” says Todd Norley, WS Development’s senior director of leasing.
Bonobos, which launched as an online shop in 2007, is known for flattering men’s pants for every day of the week (Wednesday Wheat! Friday Steel!). Their 1,094-square-foot shop opens this fall.
Mr. Sid also opens its first Boston location this fall, 50 years after launching in Newton. The swanky men’s store has cultivated a loyal following with its gentlemen’s club aesthetic, Italian suits, on-site tailoring, and complimentary bourbon bar. The smaller branch will have many of the same amenities, plus its own menswear label and an adjacent barbershop, Seaport Barber. Will the “Mad Men” vibe play in start-up territory? Despite a trend toward business casual, president Stuart Segel is confident that he’ll attract urban customers.
“People still wear neckwear! They dress formally and want to look formal, even 35- and 45-year-olds,” he said with a laugh.
Finally, there’s Filson, a Seattle brand that specializes in rugged apparel for fishing and hunting, which launched in 1897 to outfit speculators for the Klondike gold rush. The 3,482-square-foot shop will be the flagship New England location and will launch in 2018.
While there aren’t many fishing or hunting opportunities along Seaport Boulevard — though the gold-seeking parallel might be apropos — creative director Alex Carleton hopes it becomes a destination just the same for its “pared down, low-key, timeless style,” he says.
“We’re very much entrenched within the Pacific Northwest, but there are a lot of similarities between the outdoor culture of the Northwest and what you find in New England: forestry and maritime,” he says. “Our sportswear is geared to the outdoorsman and outdoorswoman.”
Shop durable Rugged Twill backpacks and rucksacks, flannel shirts, and wool Cruiser jackets, perfect for braving the elements—or maybe just the wind coming off the harbor.
