Bursting with color and vibrancy, the photos from 28-year-old Neha Singh’s Instagram account, @nehasingh189, immediately engage social media scrollers with their vivid colors and contrasting textures. Originally from Bangalore, India, Singh now works as a software engineer in Boston. Her shots of gleaming building fronts, towering structures, and sun-kissed street scenes paint idyllic portraits of places around the city and beyond.
Q. How did you first get involved in photography?
A. It all started last year when my friends and I started taking weekend vacations — it was the first time I got to see fall colors. I only had a cellphone with me, but I started posting photos, and my friends started telling me I was really good at it and had an eye for it. It was a bit like therapy — to look at beautiful things, take a picture. And I hadn’t explored Boston. When I looked at everyone else’s feed, it inspired me to go out and explore Boston because it was so beautiful, and just walk for hours.
Q. What do you look for in your photos’ composition?
A. I like to find something colorful, something that defines the place. Usually in Boston I look for red brick structures or something iconic or architecturally relevant. The history of a place really fascinates me because that was one of my favorite subjects growing up. So if someone tells me about a place, I’ll be curious and go and explore. A couple of months ago I was walking around with my friend in Beacon Hill and she told me so much about the area that I went to the same place a couple times just to see what was there. It kind of gives me a sense of being in that time, and I want to see how people were and what they did.
Q. What kinds of things do you like to photograph?
A. I like colorful architecture. Architecturally important things, or something particular to a place. In Boston it’s Beacon Hill, or in New York it’s all the beautiful churches, or in India it’s the palaces. Something that’s bound to the history of that place — I think that’s what draws me to it.
Q. All your photos are so full of color — is that something you accomplish in shooting or in editing?
A. I look for interesting structures and frames, and then I try to spend some time and get something really colorful out of it. And I enjoy editing too — sometimes I edit the same picture for a few days just to see what I can get out of that picture.
Q. A lot of your photos are from different cities. Do you travel often?
A. Right now, I’m only exploring places in the United States because I just graduated and just started getting some time off. Since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to travel. I think now I have the time, so I’m going to make the most of it and photograph every place I can go to.
