As the old saying goes, it’s tough to build a chic outfit around weather-resistant footwear.
Aquatalia aims to change that. The luxury footwear brand employs weatherproof and stain-resistant technology to Italian leather shoes and boots that actually look stylish. The company, which started a wholesale business in 1994 and launched a Manhattan store in 2016, has popped up at 44 Gloucester St. in the Back bay through March.
So how do they do it? Aquatalia’s Italian leathers are injected with a proprietary sealant during the tanning process, and the seams are also stitched and filled with a liquid sealant that prevents water from penetrating.
“We’re a unique brand — a luxury brand with our DNA rooted in fashion and style,” says Aquatalia president Wendy Sverre. Footwear ranges in price from $395 to $900 or so for a fur-lined boot.
“Our shoes are worn by 20-year-olds to 60-plus-year-olds who are very established and who have a point of view on what [they’re] wearing, and who don’t want to sacrifice style but also want comfort. She’s a working woman, on trend,” perhaps with a passion for outdoor pursuits, Sverre says.
A signature is the Imogen, a leather and cashmere-sweater slouch ankle boot on a high heel with a lug sole, made in Italy. There is also a men’s collection, plus accessories and bags. Kate Middleton and Angelina Jolie have donned the brand, Sverre notes.
The 700-square-foot shop, which Sverre calls “clean and modern,” is adjacent to sister footwear shop Frye, whose offerings have a more rugged aesthetic.
