Corbett National Park in
Ramnagar, India, is open Nov. 15-June 15, but closes for the rest of the year as monsoon rains make many dirt tracks impassable. The best time for wildlife-watching is April to June. Corbett can be reached by train from New Delhi on the overnight Ranikhet Express, which departs Old Delhi station at 10:40 p.m. every day, arriving in Ramnagar at 4:55 a.m. A berth in an air-conditioned second-class sleeper carriage costs $2.60.
Independent trips into the park, including accommodations in Dhikala, can be arranged at the park office in Ramnagar (www.corbettnationalpark.in). Entry is $19 for three days, $8 for each additional day. You can hire a Maruti Gypsy with a driver from the park office. Prices are negotiable, but expect to pay around $28-$37 per day. A four-hour tour with one of the park’s nature guides costs extra. If you choose to stay at one of the lodges that dot the park’s periphery, such as Jim’s Jungle Retreat (www.jimsjungleretreat.com; 011-91-98-9998-9508), guided tours can be part of a package.
