Whether you are backcountry hiking in the White Mountains or on safari in Africa, you need clean, safe drinking water. The SteriPEN Ultra water purifier, released this year, uses ultraviolet (UV) light to zap harmful critters in your drinking water, including 99.99 percent of protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. This ingenious device weighs just 4.2 ounces and proves easier to use than traditional pump-style water purifiers. Push the On button once to purify 1 liter or twice for 2 liters, and then submerge the UV bulb into your water bottle and swirl it around for 50 or 90 seconds. A smiley or unhappy face on the LCD screen lets you know whether all went well or not. Purify up to 50 liters before needing to recharge the device. The lithium battery can be refueled only by micro-USB cable, so bring a backup charger, just in case. $99.95 at REI.  888-783-7473,
