NORTH TRURO — When a summer road trip takes you to the tip of Cape Cod, there’s no more mellow way to spend an afternoon than sipping local wines at Truro Vineyards. At the scenic convergence of routes 6 and 6A, visitors enjoy the signature cabernet franc, crisp chardonnay, and only-on-Cape-Cod cranberry. This year the Roberts family, owners of the vineyard since 2007, is pouring its first spirits. Twenty Boat Rum is a twice-distilled spiced rum made from organic molasses or sugar cane and an exclusive blend of 10 spices sourced from the vineyard’s neighbor across the street, the Atlantic Spice Co. The distillery, South Hollow Spirits, will produce two rums this year: Twenty Boat (the name was inspired by the legend of a Cape Cod bootlegger who once eluded 20 boats filled with federal agents) and an unspiced amber rum slated for release in September. The vineyard is open seven days a week for tastings; it’s offering free samples of rum and selling rum-based cocktails created by local restaurateurs. Wine tastings are available for $10, and tours of the winery are given daily at 1 and 3 p.m.
