GILDED AGE CHRISTMAS IN NEWPORT

The yuletide season kicks off in Gilded Age splendor with Christmas at the Newport Mansions (Nov. 21-Jan. 3). Three of the area's most historic houses — The Breakers (1895), The Elms (1901) and Marble House (1892) — will be festooned in holiday finery, decorated with thousands of poinsettias, wreaths, evergreens, flowers and 24 Christmas trees. Highlights include a gingerbread mansion contest, a working model of the Vanderbilt family's New York Central Railroad, and — new this year in the ballroom at The Elms — a Victorian streetscape scene with sleighs and mannequins dressed in period costumes. Bring the kids to meet Santa (Dec. 6, 13, 20; noon-3 p.m.) and snack on cookies and eggnog — all included in regular admission price. Tours offered daily, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Winter Passport tickets for daytime admission to any three houses: adults $29.49; ages 6-17 $9; under 6 free. Individual house tickets are also available. 401-847-1000, newportmansions.org

HOLIDAY CRAFTS AND ARTS SALE

If you're someone who thinks handcrafted gifts are ever-so-much better than mass-produced objects — but lack that creative talent yourself — you may want to take advantage of great shopping at the MassArt Made Holiday Sale (Dec. 6-12; 10 a.m.-7 p.m.). From amid artwork made by current students and alumni of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, visitors can find unique gifts ranging from oil paintings and handblown glass to scarves, handmade jewelry, ceramics, silkscreen prints, and more (pictured at left). The sale is displayed in the lobby of the Tower Building on Huntington Avenue, near the E-line train to the Longwood Medical Area. The Ward Street parking lot will be open to patrons after 5 p.m. each weekday; and all day Sunday Dec. 6 and Saturday Dec. 12.
