A puppet show, arts and crafts, games, refreshments, the L.L.Bean Bootmobile, Mass Hort’s Plantmobile, and books and giveaways from ReadBoston are just part of the fun at the free Boston Children’s Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Playstead in Franklin Park. 617-635-4505;

August 25

Didn’t make it to the Olympics? Here’s the next best thing, in our own backyard, no tickets needed. Starting at 4 p.m., watch divers spring off the roof of the Institute of Contemporary Art at Fan Pier and into Boston Harbor when the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series comes to town. 617-478-3100;

August 19

Relive the surf scene of the 1970s at the Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Classic, where aging fans of the now closed Jasper’s Surf Shop (and young folks, too) shred it like the old days in an ultra-relaxed competition starting at 5 p.m. at White Crest Beach in Wellfleet.

August 23-26

Two locations near the Chinatown gate become outdoor movie theaters for the annual Films at the Gate. Catch Master of the Flying Guillotine, a 1980 Jackie Chan vehicle called The Young Master, and more kung fu action on four nights, starting at 8, free admission.

If you haven’t managed to catch one of the North End’s famous feasts of the saints yet, there’s one big one left this summer. Grab some sausage and peppers, arancini, cannoli, and other pushcart delectables, and enjoy the spectacle as crowds parade a statue of Saint Anthony through the neighborhood at this 93d annual event. 617-723-8669;
