THE FIRST THING PEOPLE NOTICE WHEN THEY WALK INTO HIS HOME I like to keep things simple, so I tend not to decorate too much.
WHAT MAKES HIM A GOOD CATCH I am smart and funny. That’s a pretty lethal combination.

> A FOOT IN THE DOOR
ERIC I had to come straight from work, so I had time only to change and get to the restaurant.
DAWN I went home [after work] to quickly freshen up.
ERIC I was a little nervous, but then I thought to myself, What’s the worst that could happen?
DAWN I was a little nervous, but also excited.
ERIC Dawn was maybe five minutes late because she had to find parking. She apologized, but I told her not to worry about it.
DAWN I checked in with the hostess, who directed me to Eric. He was waiting at the bar when I arrived.
ERIC Dawn was very pretty. She had a great smile.
DAWN Although he wasn’t necessarily my type, he had a very nice smile.
> FIRST STEPS
DAWN He had already ordered a drink, but we got to talking about our careers while I waited for mine.
ERIC We talked about all kinds of things: work, what we do for fun, where we spent recent vacations.
DAWN We started with the made-at-your-table guacamole. It was delicious! For the entree I had enchiladas.
ERIC I had an unpronounceable but tasty chicken dish as my entree.
DAWN Conversation flowed pretty easily.
> FLEET OF FOOT
DAWN I discovered that Eric is a triplet!
ERIC I discovered that Dawn is nearly fluent in Italian and spent a year and a half in Italy. We both enjoy running and the Red Sox. We [also] both agree that a good work-life balance is important. By the end of the night, I really liked Dawn.
DAWN About halfway through dinner, I started to think that our life experiences had been pretty different, which made me wonder whether we were compatible. . . . We both like to run [though].
ERIC I’d say there were sparks. [And] I’ll forgive her guilty pleasures, which are soap operas
and The Bachelor.
> ON THEIR FEET
ERIC We exchanged numbers. Then I hugged her and gave her a kiss.
DAWN I gave him a hug.
> POST-MORTEM

> SECOND DATE?
ERIC I hope so.
DAWN I’m not sure that we’re compatible — possibly. — Compiled by Peter Cocchia
