Ryan Westmoreland: 2011 profile of the retiring Red Sox prospect

The pitching star’s efforts to recover from brain surgery were the subject of a 2011 cover story

In a March 2011 cover story, Charles P. Pierce profiled Ryan Westmoreland, a Red Sox top pitching prospect from Rhode Island. Westmoreland, then 20, was trying to fight his way back to health — and the big leagues — after surgery for a brain tumor. Despite a remarkable recovery, he underwent another surgery in summer 2012, and announced his retirement on March 6, explaining that his ongoing physical challenges “make it impossible to play the game at such a high level.” Read the original Globe Magazine story, “Rebuilding Ryan,” at bostonglobe.com/magazine.
