The pitching star’s efforts to recover from brain surgery were the subject of a 2011 cover story

In a March 2011 cover story, Charles P. Pierce profiled Ryan Westmoreland, a Red Sox top pitching prospect from Rhode Island. Westmoreland, then 20, was trying to fight his way back to health — and the big leagues — after surgery for a brain tumor.
