In December, writer Michael Fitzgerald and photographer Webb Chappell gave Globe Magazine readers an exclusive look at the New England Aquarium’s remaking of its 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank, or GOT (not to be confused with GoT — that’s fan-speak for HBO’s Game of Thrones). Now, after about nine months of work, the Aquarium is putting the finishing touches on the $17 million project and unveiling the full tank — including a new exhibit area on the top floor — on July 1. Staffers have been adding as many as 100 fish and other animals to the tank every other day. Myrtle the sea turtle is back now, while the penguins whose pool she temporarily took over will return from their Quincy vacation digs on June 25. All told, the new tank will house 2,000 animals, more than twice as many as before, and each one will be more visible, thanks to crystal-clear acrylic panels and better lines of sight for kids.
