Mamma Maria, people can be nice!

A random act of kindness at a beloved North End institution.

For our 25th wedding anniversary, my husband and I went out to dinner at Mamma Maria in the North End — the restaurant where we became engaged. As we were enjoying dessert, a woman at the table next to us said, “I couldn’t help but overhear that it’s your anniversary — it’s our anniversary, too.” They were from Kentucky and were visiting Boston and Nantucket, where they had spent their honeymoon. We had a nice conversation and I gave them some ideas for sightseeing in Boston. After they left, the waitress returned to our table and explained that the couple had paid our bill and asked that we not be given any contact information. It was a random act of kindness — thank you to that couple.
