    > THEY MEET

ERIK I had picked out what clothes to wear the day before and got home from school with plenty of time to get dressed and leave without having to hurry.

JOAN I got home from work, my friend stopped by on her run so I chatted with her, then I got ready and headed off to Boston.

ERIK I felt like a little kid. I was nervous, but I felt good. I couldn’t wait.

JOAN I was a little nervous, but excited. I have never gone on a completely blind date prior to this one, so I was definitely looking forward to a new experience.

    > AND MEASURE

ERIK Since learning my date’s name, I had tried to render in my mind its phonetics into some kind of physical prediction: Joan. JOAN. When she came around the corner and into the light, I thought, Of course. Joan was very pretty.

JOAN I thought that Erik looked nice and sweet. He was wearing a light blue button-down shirt with a navy blue (my favorite color) sweater and khaki pants.

ERIK We both like running. We both run around Chestnut Hill Reservoir. We weren’t fans of the GRE. We both visited St. Andrews in Scotland and agreed it was beautiful there.

JOAN We talked about what we are studying, since we are both in graduate school. It seems like we are both very family-oriented.

ERIK I think [I was] about as comfortable as I could have hoped, and I did feel a little more comfortable as the date went on.

JOAN I was very comfortable talking with Erik. As the date progressed, I think we both got more comfortable.

ERIK I didn’t ever think, This is not going to work. I liked Joan from early on.

JOAN As Erik and I talked, I could tell that he was a gentleman. He seemed like he enjoyed talking and getting to know me.

    > AND MOSEY

ERIK [At the end of the meal] we agreed it was nice to meet each other. She said, “So it was a success.”

JOAN I thanked Erik for a nice night and [said] that I had to wait for my ride.

ERIK I stopped for a second and thought, Should I say do you feel like exchanging phone numbers? Or should I have asked earlier? Maybe you’d like to meet and run around the reservoir some time? But I said nothing. Walking to the train station, I thought, I should have wished her good luck on her exams.

    > SECOND DATE?

    JOAN We’re Facebook friends.

ERIK Joan is a sweet, smart, kind person, and if she’d like to be friends with me, that would be great. I found [her] on Facebook, so maybe we’ll see each other again.
