    > TAKEOFF

JUSTIN It was a snowy evening, so I made sure I had enough time to travel to the restaurant.

KAZ I listened to some classical music and checked the weather just to make sure that I wouldn’t be late.

JUSTIN I had never been on a blind date before. . . . I felt a little bit anxious.

KAZ It had been awhile since I went on a date, but I was moderately calm.

JUSTIN I arrived about 10 minutes ahead of time. [Kaz] was sitting at the bar already. He looked a little bit nervous but seemed excited to see me. I reached out and gave him a handshake to introduce myself, and we started the conversation.

    > UP IN THE AIR

KAZ We had quite a lot in common: We were both born abroad and love to travel. . . . I found out he teaches yoga and ice-skates. He found out I am a minister. He did not run away screaming, so that was good.

JUSTIN I learned that he lived in Amsterdam [and] also lived in Poland, where he was born. . . . He was surprised I [had been] to lots of countries, including during a seven-week around-the-world trip on my own.

KAZ Justin doesn’t mind traveling in more rustic conditions — I do.

JUSTIN He shared a lot of stories from his church and [his first career] practicing law. I appreciated his openness.

KAZ Justin is very sociable and easy to talk with.

JUSTIN Unfortunately, I lost my interest in him as the dinner went on.

KAZ He is a great, very intelligent, and very nice guy, but I guess the physical or emotional spark was not there.

JUSTIN The whole date seemed to be a self-

promotion for [Kaz]. He did it in an articulate way, though — training from being a lawyer, I guess. I appreciate it if he was trying to impress me. I was trying to ask questions to keep the interaction going.

KAZ The conversation just flowed naturally.

JUSTIN I was still trying to engage and made the dinner as pleasant as possible.

    > SMOOTH LANDING?

KAZ [After dinner], we both decided to go home.

JUSTIN I really just wanted to leave.

KAZ When we left the restaurant, it had stopped snowing. We shook hands and said we will be in touch.

JUSTIN I gave him a handshake.

KAZ I don’t think there were enough sparks for a kiss.

    > SECOND DATE?

JUSTIN I just don’t think there is any chemistry between us.

KAZ I would like to stay in touch as friends — I reached out to him already. However, I don’t think there is enough for a second date.
