5 P.M. TRUE BISTRO, SOMERVILLE
> BIG SURPRISE
ADRIENNE I put on my rain gear and my helmet, and headed out.
INNA It was raining out and I was getting there by bike, so I put on my darkest jeans hoping they wouldn’t show the splatter from the wet roads.
ADRIENNE I [arrived early and] figured I’d read a book till she came, but she was also early, which worked out splendidly.
INNA I was still standing outside the restaurant when she rode up on her bike. She parked it across the street and walked over.
ADRIENNE Wow, a lady who’s taller than me! With frosty eyes and adorable curls.
INNA I actually knew it was her because I recognized her. We’d met at a potluck years ago.
> AT THE TABLE
ADRIENNE She knows everything about food. And we’re super food-compatible, both being vegan and allergic to gluten. I have more allergies on top of that, including soy, [and] she was able to resolve some of my questions without my having to pester the waitstaff.
INNA We had two delicious salads and each tried some of both. When we realized how small the portions were we ordered three times as much of one of the side dishes.
ADRIENNE Refreshingly, we have a tremendous amount of overlap in our interests and values.
INNA We both hate monogamy and cars and men. We’re both gluten-intolerant vegans who don’t drink. We both like classical music and performance art and old movies. We both studied linguistics. We’re both tall.
ADRIENNE Knowing that we know a lot of the same people, I felt pretty good about it. And she’s pretty great.
INNA She’s very attractive and very likable, and I tend to find people more attractive as I get to know them, unless I don’t like them.
> ON THE ROAD
ADRIENNE One of my friends was going to go [out] with me that night, but sicked out. Inna was free, so we rode back out into the soggy freezy evening and went to the circus!
INNA The show was great, and it was nice to spend more time with her. After I unlocked my bike, I went over to where she was unlocking hers. We kissed and said goodnight.
ADRIENNE After the show, she rode off. When I saw which way she was going, I realized our journeys coincided, so I sped off into the dark soggy night and caught up with her, getting her attention by belting some ’90s Mariah Carey tune. We parted ways at Beacon and Mass. Ave.
> A SECOND DATE?
ADRIENNE A different friend bailed for Boston Ballet’s Close to Chuck the very next night, so I invited her along!
