Letters to the editor of the Globe Magazine

Readers respond to a story about a powerful smile that breaks boundaries.

Such beauty in the hearts that adopted this precious child and the soul that produced this Connections piece (“My Daughter’s Smile,” April 30). Thank you for sharing and reminding us of the power of human connection.

I was deeply moved by Ruth’s story and saddened that she died at such a young age. I can only imagine how devastated the writer and her family were to lose her. It was amazing how many lives she touched in such a short time, including her teacher; her “boyfriend,” Sean; and her classmates and neighbors. She was a treasure who made an impact on everyone she met. I have a son with autism who is now 52. Life was not always easy for our family, but John has made us understand that we are all special; he brought us joy and taught us compassion for all people with special needs.
