    The Topsfield Fair returns, spicing up its traditional carnival midway, pig races, and agricultural exhibitions — including the Giant Pumpkin contest — with musical star power. Herman’s Hermits (October 4), the Village People (October 5) and Cassadee Pope, the first female winner of The Voice (October 7), are among the performers. 10 a.m. daily. $11 weekdays, $15 weekends.     Starting Friday, September 29

    Halloween arrives early at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford, home to the Witch’s Woods “screampark.” Admission includes a hayride, haunted houses, and a display of professionally carved jack-o’-lanterns. New this year is the Horrorwood Chamber of Chills, a walk-through attraction highlighting scary movies. Thursdays-Sundays 6:30 p.m. through October 29, plus October 30 and 31. $37.

    Germany comes to the Seaport for Harpoon Brewery’s Octoberfest. The 21-plus event features live music — traditional German, polka, rock, roots — and food trucks as well as German-cake-eating and chicken-dancing contests. $25; includes one beer and souvenir cup. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

    Roxbury’s art community shows off at Roxbury Open Studios. Featuring painters, photographers, fashion and jewelry designers, and more artists of all ages, the showcase takes place in neighborhood studios and at Hibernian Hall and the First Church of Roxbury. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Free.
