Blind date: ‘He had the energy of a suave Billy Crystal’

Will it be comedy or tragedy for these dramatic daters?

Britt Mitchell and Ben Gold.
Britt Mitchell and Ben Gold.

BRITT MITCHELL: 30 / theater teacher

When she is happiest: Performing onstage

What makes her a catch: She’s positive, fun, and usually has good snacks

BEN GOLD: 28 / Actor, singer, comedian

When he is happiest: Performing — onstage, on camera, in the shower

What makes him a catch: A unique sense of humor

Britt I had to wash up because I was making props with my middle schoolers that day and had paint on my hands. Can’t go to a blind date with paint hands.

Ben I researched parking options since Disney on Ice was at The Garden that night.

Britt I wanted to do the thing where you dramatically turn and reveal your beautiful self, like something out of Sex and the City. I was wearing a red leather jacket. I’m definitely a Carrie.

Ben She was sitting, so I was slightly worried she’d be taller than me (apparently my ego cares about that). She wasn’t though, and my ego breathed a sigh of relief.

Britt We were both early. It made sense because theater people say: “Early is on time, on time is late, and late is not discussed.” He had the energy of a suave Billy Crystal. I mean that in a positive way.

Ben She teaches theater to K-8 students, which I respect (I don’t think I could remain sane doing that).

Britt We realized how small the Boston theater community is, because everybody knows everybody.

Ben We had a lot of mutual friends.

Britt We realized we can’t pronounce charcuterie, but we still got it.

Ben I got the charred avocado. It was different but good.

Britt Our conversation was very theater-heavy, which I didn’t mind at all. We both are Sondheim fans. I play a lot of silly characters and that says I’m a clown of a human. When he said he played Sweeney, that sparked my attention. He clearly can sing and act. Sweeney Todd is an attractive, brooding character.

Ben She clearly knows who she is, and was her most authentic self from the get-go.

Britt I had to go because I was going to see a friend’s show. I think he understood.

Ben We walked around and made witty (in my opinion anyway) small talk.

Britt We agreed that the date was fun. I gave him my number. We hugged. I am a hugger but I was definitely comfortable hugging him.

Ben Conversation was fantastic but I didn’t feel any sparks.

Britt I’d like to go on a second date. You don’t know if you truly like or hate something until you try it twice.

Ben I’d love to hang out again; I don’t think it will go anywhere romantically.
