Man may plead insanity in murder trial

A lawyer for a Marblehead man accused of killing his girlfriend and her nearly full-term fetus has indicated in court for the first time that he plans an insanity defense. Peter Ronchi, 48, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the May 2009 slaying of Yuliya Galperina, who was due to give birth within days. The prosecutor told a judge in Salem Superior Court Thursday that Ronchi’s attorney had filed notice of mental impairment for the defense. Ronchi’s trial is scheduled to start Jan. 30. Police say he stabbed Galperina in her Salem apartment when she told him the baby was not his. (AP)
