Man dies in industrial accident at Taunton hummus plant

A Fall River man died early Friday morning in what officials are calling an industrial accident at the Tribe Mediterranean Foods plant in Taunton.

Taunton police responded to the hummus manufacturing plant on Prince Henry Drive around 1 a.m. this morning. Tribe employee Daniel Callazo, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, Bristol district attorney’s spokesman Gregg Miliote said.

The incident appears to be an accident, Miliote said, but it is under investigation by Taunton police, State Police, and the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. State Police detectives, crime scene experts, and photographers also responded to the scene, State Police said.

In a statement, Tribe said it is working closely with OSHA and local officials to determine exactly what caused Callazo’s death.

“Foremost, we are terribly saddened by this morning’s incident and our thoughts and prayers go out to the individual’s family at this difficult time,” the statement said.

Tribe hummus was first introduced to the United States in Boston in 1993 and now distributes its three lines of hummus across the country, according to the company’s website.
