MBTA takes more time for recommendation on fares, cuts

State transportation officials said yesterday that they have decided to push back the date when MBTA planners will provide a final recommendation on fare increases and service cuts in the fiscal 2013 budget.

T board members and acting general manager Jonathan R. Davis said Tuesday that they expected that information to be presented board meeting March 14. But in subsequent discussions, they agreed to delay the presentation to allow staff more time to review comments from 30 public hearings, the last of which is March 12 in Brighton.

The recommendations will instead be delivered in time for the board’s April 4 meeting, Department of Transportation spokeswoman Cyndi Roy said.

The staff is expected to present one plan - refining two proposals introduced in January and incorporating public comment and other changes - that the board will be asked to approve or revise by April 15, under state law. Changes begin July 1.
