Fire on nuclear sub at Maine shipyard hurts 7

KITTERY, Maine (AP) — A fire on a nuclear-powered submarine at a Maine shipyard has injured seven people, including a firefighter.

Crews responded at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday to the USS Miami SSN 755 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on an island in Kittery, a town near Portsmouth, N.H.

The fire was extinguished in the early morning hours Thursday, although firefighters were still looking for hot spots.

The shipyard says all the injured people have been treated and released, except for one who was reported in stable condition at a hospital.

Shipyard public affairs specialist Gary Hildreth says the fire started in the forward compartments, which include living and command and control spaces. The sub’s reactor wasn’t operating at the time and was unaffected. There were no weapons on board.
