A Norwell post office was evacuated this morning after colored smoke began emanating from a package being sorted, the US Postal Service said.
The State Police bomb squad as well as the Norwell police and fire departments went to the scene. Norwell Fire Captain Jeff Simpson said that, along with the smoke, the box made an “ominous sound.” It was later found to contain numerous smoke bombs.
“Everything has returned to normal,” said US Postal Service spokeswoman Christine Dugas.
Smoke bombs are illegal to ship through the mail and illegal to possess in Massachusetts, according to the State fire marshal.
The postal service is currently investigating the incident.
