Fishermen asked to help capture pelican displaced by Sandy

Fishermen in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay were urged to keep a lookout this weekend for a brown pelican spotted on Prudence Island. Pelicans generally aren’t seen north of the Carolinas, but experts say Hurricane Sandy blew many of the birds into the Northeast. Wildlife advocates asked fishermen to try to capture the Prudence Island pelican if they see it and bring it to a wildlife clinic. The Newport Daily News reported that another pelican found in Galilee on Nov. 7 and a third that landed on a fishing boat about 120 miles south of Block Island were expected to be flown to Florida this weekend by the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island.
