Boston police identify victim of fatal shooting Monday in Brighton

A Brewster man who had attended college in Brookline was identified Friday as the victim of a fatal shooting Monday on Leicester Street in Brighton.

Leroy Cooper, 26, was found with a gunshot wound about 5:30 p.m. near an elementary school. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Cooper studied hospitality at Newbury College from 2004 to 2008, and played on the school’s men’s volleyball team, college officials said.

“Thirty years living here and this is the first time that we have had something like that,” said Roberto Alvarez, 75, adding that when police arrived, he could see a car stopped at an awkward angle next to a utility pole.

Rita Fahy, 89, who said she has lived on the street for 60 years, said the street is usually quiet.

“There was no excitement, until the next thing you know, [it was] bathed in blue light,” said Fahy.
